Do I have to file a Tax Return?

Only individuals whose incomes exceed certain thresholds must file tax returns. Five factors determine whether you must file do so, including you earn. Are you someone else’s dependent? What’s your filing status? How old are you? Are you blind? What was your gross income for the year?

The IRS defines gross income as “all income you receive in the form of money, goods, property, and services that is not exempt from tax.” 

How soon can I file taxes?

You can file your federal tax return as soon as you have all the relevant information and documents you’ll need, but this doesn’t mean that the IRS will immediately process your return.

When will I get my refund?

It’s really very easy to check on the status of a tax refund from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or from a state tax department—assuming you’ve filed your tax return and the IRS has accepted it.

How long does it take to process my refund?

The IRS typically issues tax refunds within 21 days of receiving the tax return, if the tax return was filed electronically. It issues refunds in approximately six to eight weeks for paper returns that are mailed to the IRS for manual processing.

How to check the status of a Federal Refund after filing?

When you do finally file your tax return, you can check your refund’s status at the IRS Where’s My Refund? Web page, or from your smartphone at IRS2go. The app is available for Android and iOS devices.

You can call the IRS Refund Hotline at 1-800-829-1954 if you prefer to do things the good, old-fashioned way. It’s a toll-free number.
